WHY seconds are so important?
One Second of time interval corresponds to a distance of 40 million meters at the equator (at 0 degrees lattitude) divided by 86,400 seconds per 24 hours which is equal to approx. 463 meters distance travelled per second.. Which shows the importance of time in navigation and for finding our position on earth. Of course the same argument applies for the satellites and the celestial objects.

Ships find their correct longitude by the accurate time difference between Greenwich and their ship time. For instance at exact noon measured by the ship's sextant the time difference will tell the navigator how far they are from the Greenwich. In navigation every hour before or after Greenwich location in England is taken as 15 degrees in longitude. 360degrees/24 hours=15deg.per hour(15 seconds of longitude=1 time seconds)
